Happy Halloween everyone! Ready to go trick or treating? We are, especially our little one. His costume is also ready which he picked himself, but I think it’s the candies that he’s going to collect that he is most excited about. Who wouldn’t be? I’m excited too because I know he’s going to share some candy with me. Sweet!
And speaking of sweet, the adjective kind of sweet, I just love the sweetness of the funnel cake. I told you the story of our Fall Festival fun a couple of days ago and after doing the corn maze, our tummies asked for food. The little one’s tummy was the one who grumbled first actually. Kids. They are hungry all the time. So we looked for something to snack on and saw the sign that said, “Funnel Cake!”
To be honest with you, although it wasn’t the first time that I’ve heard of funnel cake (the first time was at the State Fair last year), it was my first to try eating it. First time for the little one too. Not for the hubs though. I would totally be surprised if it would be his first. We’ve been in the U.S. for almost four years already and we hadn’t tried eating funnel cake until last Sunday. It’s certainly something we didn’t have in the Philippines. Nonetheless, no regrets there. Well, on second thought, I think I did after realizing how good it was. So good that it was gone in a heartbeat. Really! I believe you would agree with me once you’ve tried it too.
We watched the man while he was preparing the cake and it made me wonder what it was made of and why it was called funnel cake. Thanks to Google. I got the answers to my questions.
Funnel cake is actually a type of doughnut and it originated in Pennsylvania. Though it’s a treat my husband has had many times before, he especially remembers stopping at a roadside stand and having some original Pennsylvania funnel cake while driving through the state on his way to New York City. The main ingredients are batter and cooking oil. When made at concession stands, a pitcher with an integral funnel spout is used. It is typically served plain with powdered sugar just like what we had, but it can also be served with jelly, fresh fruit and other toppings.
I want one now while writing this. I’m drooling over that photo. Har.
Have you had funnel cake before? It’s delicious, isn’t it?

Funnel cake is so good and just reminds me of having a good time at a local fair. I love the doughy texture and crisp outside…and the powdery sugar sweetness. It’s one of my favorite things to get when we go to a carnival or fair.
OMG I haven’t had funnel cake in far too long! LOVE.
Oh I love funnel cake! I hope your little one had a great time trick or treating!

My kids and hubby enjoy getting these at the fairs every year. I don’t really care for them, my sister LOVES them, she is actually the one who introduced my kids to them lol
Our family loves funnel cakes, it is one of the thinks we look forward to when our local fair comes into town.
My favorite part about the fair when I was growing up was the food – especially funnel cake. It is so good! I love it with powdered sugar. I’m glad you were able to try it for the first time!
I know, right? Such a memorable first. 🙂
This is mouth drooling – would totally love to have these haha

I saw your post on Facebook and just had to comment! We love funnel cake, for us it takes us back to memory lane at our annual county fairs. I can’t wait to try this recipe with the pumpkin/cinnimon twist – my kids are going to go nuts! 😀
Pumpkin/cinnamon twist? That sounds delish. Thank you for taking the time to comment here. I really appreciate it.

I love funnel cake. I haven’t had it in years but I can always imagine the taste like it was yesterday.
I use to make funnel cakes in an amusement park. They are fun… but it’s like torture if you have to make them for other people and not be able to eat any… lol

Hadn´t heard about it either. It sounds a bit like waffles with the choice of powder sugar or fruit toppings.
First time to see this kind of cake and I bet it tastes good.
