And the day at the Carolinas Aviation Museum continues. Part 1 tells about the aircraft that were located outside of the museum. We’re headed to the inside of the museum this time and I’ll talk about this airplane that really made my jaw dropped. I had no clue that it was there.
US Airways Flight 1549: Miracle on the Hudson
Do you remember the US Airways Flight 1549 on January 15, 2009? Captain Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles had to make an emergency water landing in the Hudson River after birds got sucked into the the engines turbines causing it to fail.
It was a scheduled domestic flight from LaGuardia Airport in New York City to Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, North Carolina with 155 occupants on board. There were no lives lost which was amazing.
They had some of the things from the interior of the airplane neatly displayed in the museum, from the pilots uniforms to their briefcases and many personal items from the passengers.
The type of goose that got sucked into the engine which made it fail was also on display.
And here’s the plane.
I can still remember seeing the news on TV back in 2009, but never in my wildest dreams did think I would be able to see the plane so up close and personal. When I checked the museum before heading there, I didn’t know that the plane was there. What a surreal moment that was.
The Airbus looked intact from the side.
But as you can see, there was a little damage in front but a big one on the back.
That emergency landing will always be a part of history and will always have an impact on people especially those that were actually on that plane.
My boys would love this so much. We were at the Smithsonian Air & Space museum recently and I had to drag them out – literally.
How amazing this museum must be! I would love to see this myself-it’s such a great piece of history now!
This sounds like a very interesting museum. I was in the USAF and I always find aviation subjects very fascinating.
Museums are one of the best places to take the kids. They make learning fun, and they get the kids excited about the world around them.
That looks like so much fun. I think it’s great that they included a duck in their aviation museum. That’s a nice touch!
How fun is that? My kiddos would love to visit an aviation museum. How I wish there is one nearby.
That is amazing that the actual plane is there. I remember when it happened too. It is a miracle that he landed that plane so well and no one was killed.
I think my kids would enjoy looking at this, they are very fascinated with airplanes right now.
This museum sounds really awesome. That plane would be really neat to see. My kids would love something like this!
Oh wow I had no idea this plane was on display either. It’s pretty crazy how little damage is visible on the plane.
I think my nephews would like this more than any of my kiddos, but hey there’s a place for everyone. I’d probably enjoy it though!
This looks like a fun place to take kids to. I bet this place was packed after the movie Planes came out with kids eager to meet the planes. Thanks for sharing your adventure there with us.
I didn’t know that they had that plane displayed anywhere! That would be really awesome to see!
I remember seeing that on the news too! I didn’t know they put it in a museum, very interesting!
I’d like to take my kids to an aviation museum. I bet it was awesome to see some of those planes up close.
I love a good museum, looks like you guys had a blast. I will have to add this to my must see list.
How cool to see the plane close up! Capt. Sully lives right here in the San Francisco Bay Area. It was truly a miracle that he landed that plane and nobody died.
I remember when this happened. It’s amazing that you got to experience the plane up close and personal. You were that close to a piece of history.
It is definitely another place to visit for me. I love the history it shows.
How fun is this place? My kids would absolutely flip. Seriously.
I’m not familiar with Flight 1549 but gosh, what a reason to make that emergency landing. Imma read more about the incident after this ( lol ). It’s pretty cool how they managed to keep the plane there are at the museum. It definitely makes the museum visit even more interesting.
What a great museum! I know my family would enjoy visiting and seeing these planes.
That is so cool that they have this on display. Those pilots did a great job making sure everyone on board was safe.
I would love to take my son to this museum. I think he would truly enjoy seeing a plane this close up.
We have an aviaton museum around us too. I haven’t been yet – then again we only moved to the USA (and this area) about a year ago. There’s still time!
This remind me of the naval museum we went to in Pensacola Florida. Speaking of museum, we went to a historical one here nearby.
Omg this place would be so cool to visit! My daughter would love something like this! We travel a lot and fly constantly and she’s finally old enough where she thinks planes are cool lol…
This would be a great museum to go to. My Dad would love it. It would make a great day for the both of us to do together.
My family is hoping to visit the Carolinas this summer, so this is a great place to add to our bucket list. It is hard to believe the size of the ducks that got sucked into that plane.
Aviation history is so cool to me, especially the old WWII era planes. There’s a great air museum a few hours from us we are going to take the kids to this summer.
Oh wow, that is a really cool piece of history to get up, close and personal with. That’s a great display for it too with the personal belongings and other items. I remember when that heroic landing was being covered in the news – amazing there was no loss of life.
My pilot husband would really enjoy this. Pinning this and revisiting when we are in the area.
What a fun day you had. My daughter would have enjoyed touring this museum as well.
My husband will definitely enjoy this museum. Thank you for the post.
