We’ve been getting so much rain this fall, (it’s actually raining now while I’m writing this) so we try our best to enjoy outside activities whenever we can. Like I said previously in my October Recap, it was in the third week of October when we went to Eliada to enjoy their corn maze. It was chilly that day, but at least the sun was shining.
Located in Asheville, North Carolina, Eliada Home was originally established as a haven for unwed mothers in 1903 by the Reverend Lucius B. Compton. By 1906, there were so many occupants – unwanted kids left behind – that Reverend Compton located a few acres of land and opened an orphanage, naming it Eliada Home, Eliada referring to one of King David’s sons; in Hebrew, Eliada means “one for whom God cares.” In the past years, Eliada has went from an orphanage/dormitory setting to a family oriented residential care facility as well as focusing on foster care.
Over the years, the staff and children maintained the facility by selling milk and eggs provided by the cows and chickens they raised, growing and canning the produce they didn’t sell and doing all the maintenance on the grounds and buildings themselves. To this day, returning alumni still call their former home “The Farm.”
The Eliada Corn Maze is the largest corn maze in North Carolina. At first I thought it was located in a nearby town outside of Asheville until the husband told me it was actually within the city limits. We’ve been to corn mazes before, but we always opt to visit a new one each year. This is our third corn maze experience (first HERE and second HERE), and just like the first two corn maze experiences that we had before, we had fun!
The Eliada Corn Maze is composed of four different corn mazes. If you look at the map to the right, you can see four different colors that signifies the four different corn mazes, each larger than the other. We took the largest one first (green color) and thought we would be able to do the four. But it was so large that the hubs and I were out of breath after finishing it. So, the little one went and did the smallest corn maze (red color) by himself. Brave little one!
Just starting the journey right here and we got lost at some point, but at least we found our way back to where we started.
We had a little map and checked in at every check point that we saw. There’s the hubs right there punching a hole in our map so we would know that we’d been there and we’re following the right path.
Eliada doesn’t only have a corn maze. They also have a slide that both kids and adults alike could enjoy, a bouncing pillow, a hay ride, and a hay maze.
They also had corn cannons and those human-looking figures that you see are the targets.
In efforts to continue providing their many services which caters to helping children, they host the corn maze as an annual fundraiser, which means that going to Eliada is like killing two birds with one stone: you get to have fun, and you get to help in their fundraising too. Isn’t that great?
