…and music there was. Last night we went to our son’s middle school concert band performance. It was nothing short of magnificent! He’s in the 7th grade, his third year of music, and without a doubt, just listening made it very clear of the leaps and bounds these students have made since the first time they picked up an instrument.
I’ll have to admit, I heard not one piece that I’d ever heard and that’s amazing because I, myself, have a concert-band history. Though I was a late starter – I didn’t do band in my elementary years – I joined the band when I was in high school. And not only did I do the concert band, I was also in the marching band, the stage band and the pep band, as well as singing in the chorus. I played the baritone horn other than in the stage band where I played the guitar. As for the number of performances I did over those years, I haven’t a clue for it was a very busy time. But, my experiences with the band are the most cherished memories of my high school years.
I was so pleased when Yogi decided to join the band, knowing that he would also begin the journey of creating forever memories. His instrument is the trumpet which has the same fingerings as my baritone horn had, and I actually tried to play it a couple of times, with no great success; the mouthpiece is a wee bit smaller than that of the baritone horn. But, surprisingly to me, I did remember the proper fingerings.
An unexpected treat to attending last nights concert was running into an old classmate of mine. I saw him and though I recognized him, I couldn’t remember who he was, but at that very moment he saw me and came right over, saying my name, and his name came immediately to my mind. Ironically, he was there to see his granddaughter perform as opposed to me being there for my son, though we’d both been in high school at the same time. ‘Tis a strange world, is it not?
And so one more step was made in finishing up this school year. Come this Saturday, we’ll go to the last soccer game of this season, and within three weeks, the school year will come to a close. But…before we know it, summer vacation will be over and it will be back to the everyday grind. So we’ll be making great efforts in enjoying our free time; I can hardly wait!

My sons school they are going to require him to play an instrument in fifth grade. I played the trumpet for a long time and really enjoyed it. I can’t wait to see what instrument he chooses.

The importance of music in school curriculums cannot be overstated. It helps them form different types of connections in their brains. That’s a proven fact.

That’s great! I missed my daughter concert because I was in the hospital but luckily we got it on film so I was able to see it still. I can’t wait for the Summer break but like you said it will be over before we know it.

I wish our schools still had band class. It was always so much fun to go to music class and play. We got to experiment with all the instruments.

My daughter has her end of the year band performance coming up soon. This was her first year and I have to say I was impressed with how much she learned. My husband played in the band growing up and I did not. I’m so glad that our school has a band program. As you said there are great opportunities for making memories and music is great for their growing minds.

I played the flute in elementary school and I loved it. I wish I would’ve continued with it because I was really good! Haha I’m glad you had a great time at the concert. Hopefully he continues his love for music.

they say kids that play musical instruments do very well in school and testing… I wonder if my kids will play in band, and what instrument they’d want to play?!… they’re both very young still! but time will go fast I’m sure!
