When it comes to Atlanta, I have a plethora of memories. I’ve been going there for years, mostly to see the Atlanta Braves play baseball. And just recently, another opportunity presented itself to make the journey there.
Though never a Brave, this statue is in tribute of Ty Cobb who was known as the ‘Georgia Peach’, one of the most famous players in the history of baseball.
Actually, we had some personal business to attend to in the city but in my mind’s eye, it would be a crime to be there and not see the Braves play. Fortunately, they had a game that day so I went online and purchased the tickets. This time, I decided to go whole hog and bought tickets right down on the first base line.
The view from our seats.
I took Lynndee and Yogi to Atlanta back in 2012 to introduce them to my favorite city and baseball team. The tickets I bought for that trip were for the Terrace Infield level, the second section back from the field. But seeing that we were there for the weekend and two games, that was a budgetary move, and the seats were good. The games were exciting as well. Unfortunately, we just had time for the one game this trip and the results were not what we anticipated compared to our first visit there when they won both games we attended.
The Braves opponent was the Colorado Rockies and everything was great until the 8th inning. The Braves young pitcher, Mike Foltynewicz, had been excellent to that point throwing a commanding fastball of between 97 and 100 mph. Even at the plate he excelled, getting a run scoring hit in the 7th inning giving the Braves a 3-0 lead. But after allowing the first three batters to reach base in the 8th, giving up one run, the Braves interim manager, Brian Snitker, replaced him with the first of three relief pitchers. I’ll not even go into how they performed other than to say that the game was tied going to the bottom of the 8th. The Braves were unable to score in the 8th allowing the Rockies to go ahead in the top of the 9th by scoring an unearned run and then win the game by holding the Braves scoreless in the bottom of the 9th.
Though disappointing, it was still and exciting game, highlighted by seeing one of my Brave favorites, catcher A. J. Pierzynski, hit his first home run of the season. And if anything, seeing how the Braves have been playing this year, I’m becoming a big believer in that cliché baseball saying, “Wait till next year,” something the Chicago Cubs have been saying since they last won the World Series in 1908…sorry Cubbie fans.
But next year is looking better. The young pitchers are learning how to pitch in an on-the-job training way and the Braves will be playing at a new stadium, SunTrust Park, and I can hardly “wait till nest year” comes around. Until then, keep working and trying and GO BRAVES!

I don’t really get into sports, but I have always to attend a major league baseball game. Baseball has always sparked fond memories for me, especially since I lived close by several baseball parks when I was a kid. 🙂
