It was way back in the year 2000 that Rolling Stone Magazine dubbed my hometown of Asheville, NC, one of the most eclectic small cities in the United States, as the “new freak capital of the US.” But just recently, Asheville ranked #2 on the list of “The U.S. Cities That Are Gentrifying the Fastest,” put out by Realtor.com. Definitely two opposing viewpoints. Still, Asheville is home to one of the most amazing cultures one can experience, right in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. The city offers a distinct menu of arts and entertainment that would suit the tastes of any discriminating visitor. And The River Arts District murals are a must-see when you visit Asheville. Well that is if you are into art like this. I am. They are colorful, creative and really stunning.
The River Arts District in Asheville is becoming one of the favorite parts of the city to explore not only by locals, but also by tourists. Other than the beautiful and colorful murals, there are stores that offers arts and crafts. Also, there are restaurants that offer good food for different palates to sample. Ironically, according to my husband, this area was once-upon-a-time the main industrial area of the city, which has since been transformed into a haven for artists. So while enjoying the beauty, you can also see parts and pieces of the historical past.
I’ve been living here in Asheville for six years now, but without a doubt, I haven’t seen all of it yet. Located on Old Lyman Road, the creativity shown on these murals created by talented graffiti artists will definitely fascinate you. You can see the beauty of the murals from these photos that I’ve taken, but these are not even half of what you can see there.
A cute play of words on Asheville’s nickname, “The Land of the Sky”, where the city hall has been disguised as a spray can.
The last photo is probably my favorite. I think it’s cute!
The murals at the River Arts District are not the only place where you can find murals in Asheville. There are more around the city and that would be my next assignment with the hubs – hunting and finding those murals.

The murals are so beautiful. They have painted a few in cowtown (Fort Worth Stockyards) but haven’t really added the pretty artwork anywhere else. I often see beautiful artwork on the train box cars too. Most of those painters are super talented and I wish that more cities would utilize their services on beautifying the city rather than vandalizing it.

Whoever created those murals are talented artists. Such creativity and skill! I really like all of them, and chuckled a bit at the Beyonce/Lemonade one. I wish we had thing like that in our town. But people here probably wouldn’t see it as art and would paint over it.
