I’ve made several trips to the Philippines and I’ve never been disappointed in the experience. And our recent month-long vacation to the Philippines certainly didn’t disappoint me, as well as my wife Lynndee, as she shared here with you. Actually, both of us have already shared a few posts about the trip and yet there is still so much more to speak of.
One of the great things about travel is sampling the local food, especially when you journey to a foreign country. Lynndee has already written her a post about one of the restaurants we went to, and now it’s my turn.
The restaurant was Abi’s Restaurant and Grill. If you do a web search, you’ll find there are dozens of restaurants named Abi’s all over the United States. However, there are two Abi’s restaurants in the Philippines that I know of and we went to this one located just outside General Santos City because Lynndee’s sister knew of it, and what a choice it was!
The first thing we saw on arrival was an outdoor grill where you could order your choice of fresh seafood, pork or vegetables. Or you could just be seated and order off the menu and the food would still be prepared on the grill. Some of the choices we indulged in were pork adobo and grilled talaba (oysters), chopsuey, squid adobo, kinilaw na isda (yellowfin tuna), sinugbang isda (blue marlin), beef menudo, nilat-ang baka (boiled beef with vegetables), grilled tilapia and guso (seaweed) salad. And of course, there was plenty of rice, the Philippine substitute for potatoes.
Needless to say, after spending the evening there, all of us were absolutely stuffed to the gills – pardon the pun. Nonetheless, this feast was one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve ever had in a restaurant anywhere in the world. And, unfortunately, there is not anywhere locally here in the US that I can get this kind of meal without miles of travel. And at that, there would be no experience of being in a different place surrounded by wonderful and beautiful local residents. All I can do now is be patient and wait until my next trip to General Santos City, the Tuna Capital of the Philippines.

I’ve only had the chance to enjoy Filipino food once, and I’ve never forgotten it. It’s so good. The flavors are so unique.

I’ve never had the chance of trying Filipino food (part of living in Texas; not a lot of food diversity unless you live in a big city). But I love seafood, particularly fish, so it seems like I’d probably like it. We’re hoping to travel in an RV soon so maybe I’ll get a chance on the road.

I would love to try real Filipino food! This all looks so good. I am in Kansas so we have few authentic places to find food like this.

Seafood is what I miss the most from my home country. It’s so rare finding fresh seafood here,, all I can buy are frozen!

That all looks great. I’ve never tried Filipino food before. I’m not the biggest seafood fan, but I have family that loves it.
