After planning it for a while, my husband was finally able to bake this cornbread using his Mom’s recipe that he had kept all these years. He’s got a lot of his Mom’s recipes that were written on recipe cards and were kept in a plastic recipe card container. Don’t you just love the old school way of writing down recipes?
We’ve shared some of his Mom’s recipes here on the blog before which you can check in our Recipe Page and we’ve all enjoyed them. His mom was a good cook. Too bad, I didn’t get to meet her. I think I could have used some tips and tricks from her on feeding her picky son. 😉
I prepared beef stew one cool day last week and that’s when the hubs decided to prepare the cornbread. I’ve never had cornbread with beef stew before. That was what he was used to having while growing up whenever his Mom prepared beef stew. The idea sounded good to me so I told him to go for it. He was right, it was indeed good to pair the cornbread with beef stew. So there’s another American tradition that my husband has introduced to me.
But as for cornbread, though, what reminded my hubs of it was that for years his Mom baked a cake each day for his father because he loved it. He would eat it with just raw onions or peppers or make the traditional southern treat, cornbread and milk, a glass of milk with cornbread crumbled up in it. Hubs was reminded of that – and the cornbread – while browsing through her recipes.
Here’s the recipe for you to try:

Thanks to the hubs for introducing me to that new tradition as well as for baking this cornbread to pair with the beef stew. I should give credit to where it’s due, right? 🙂
It’s really beginning to feel a lot like fall now. Gone is the summer-like weather that we had when fall started. And with this chilly weather we’re getting, a stew or soup is simply the best to have for dinner. And let’s not forget the cornbread to pair it with!
Have you tried preparing cornbread before? How about pairing it with a stew?
Happy Friday and hope y’all enjoy your weekend!

Yum this sounds so good, there isn’t a lot of ingredients either. I love recipes written down on cards, I have a few of my grandmas and not only are the recipes delicious but I cherish them.

I’ve never made cornbread in my life. I think it’s awesome that he’s sharing this recipe with us all. There’s nothing like a recipe that reminds you of your childhood.

I love old family recipes. My mom’s recipe box was thrown away and I was a bit sad when I found out. There were a few recipes that I wanted that were passed down to her from her mom. I just haven’t been able to find them on the Internet either. 🙁
