Even if you currently have regular employment, that doesn’t mean you’ll have it a few years from now, or even next month. This isn’t mentioned to scare you, just to point out the fact that job security isn’t a sure thing these days. Just like your local insurance agency can keep you from suffering from a major financial fallout, the same is true of getting a side gig.
Extra Money
One of the best, and most obvious, benefits of having a side gig is having extra cash on hand. Even if it’s just an extra hundred dollars or so a month, that can make a big difference. Just putting that extra money back into a savings account is a good idea for future financial mishaps as well as retirement.
You’ll Have Something to Fall Back On
Even if you’re a great employee, still, the fact remains that you can be laid off at a moment’s notice. Should that happen, do you know how long it will take before you can find another job? By getting a side gig now, you’ll have a way to keep bringing in money, keep the wolves at bay and ease some of the stress and worry that comes with being unemployed. Any severance or unemployment you receive and the money you make from your side gig could add up to a full-time income for a while.
Expand Your Skill Set
Being multifaceted and multi-talented is great for your personal as well as your professional life. Side gigs can help you cultivate new skills and abilities you can bring to your full-time job, and the skills gained from your full-time job can make you more adept at your side gig, which can bring in more projects and potentially more earnings as well. Say you do get laid off or otherwise lose your job, what you’ve learned and gained through your side gig could be just what nets you the next regular employment position.
Do What You’re Passionate About
You might have a full-time job, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you love what you do. Rather than sacrifice passion for a paycheck, look into a side gig that allows you to explore your passion and make your life more exciting. Your side gig could help give you something to look forward to every day, and keep boredom as well as depression at bay.
No matter what you like doing or the industry in which you prefer to work, chances are good that there’s a side gig that’s perfect for you. Start exploring your options and the possibilities that await.

I do believe it is important to take advantage of extra money any time you are able. I have taken on small side jobs and I am always glad I did, since some of those opportunities ended or I was unable to keep doing it in terms of commitment, schedule, etc.
