With less than four weeks of classes left for our kiddo, the hubs and I are already talking about our summer vacation this year. We usually go somewhere in the summer and have some fun and quality family time. We have not made definite plans yet, but it sure is not going to be another month-long vacation to my home country like we did last year. Traveling across the world is expensive so we’ll keep it budget-friendly this time around. Besides, it’s always fun wherever you go as long as your family is with you.
We’ve already been to a few places here the U.S. and you can find those places that we visited on our Travels tab. And more often than not, we always make it a point to have a vacation on a budget. So here’s my tips.
1. Road Trip
Most of our vacations were road trips and that’s because other than saving money by taking a car over a plane, it is always fun for us to drive through new places and see the country. We also save on renting a car at our destination.
2. Plan Ahead
Booking weeks in advance for your hotel stay saves you money compared to last-minute booking.
3. Travel Off-Peak
Visiting places on a holiday weekend or during big events like festivals, etc. could mean higher hotel rates so we’d rather go on a not so busy weekend or in the middle of the week.
4. Use the Web or Apps
Either for discounts on attractions or comparing hotel rates, do your research. I have a favorite app that I use when it comes to choosing the right hotel for us. It helps me compare hotel rates and find the cheapest one with the best accommodations.
5. Set a Budget
You can easily get lost in spending when on vacation so we set a budget for food or souvenirs.
I’ve come up with these ideas based on the previous experiences I’ve gathered over my years here in the U.S. And, of course, the hubs has shared so much with me for he’s an ol’ pro when it come to U.S. vacations.
Do you have any tips you would like to add? Please leave them n the comments section below.

Off peak is definitely the best advice I could ever give someone wanting to travel on a budget too, that’s for sure! Sadly my husband and I can only really travel around Christmas so um, yeahhhh NO discounts then! lol

Off-peak is key, however, we do a family road trip every summer as there is so much to discover in Ontario. Driving to Quebec would be amazing too!

We have three camping trips planned this summer and plan on just being tourists in our own town since we moved here about six months ago. It will be neat getting to see this place in the summer time.

Planning ahead is really the most effective way to save. If you have the money spent already, you don’t have to worry about finding things to do at the last minute.
