one can feel at home wherever he may be.
One of the great things about taking a vacation is traveling to other cities and discovering the different architectures from your own hometown. But on our recent sojourn to New York City, I not only saw the differences, I also discovered the similarities. Therefore, I felt right at home.
My hometown of Asheville, NC, is well known for its treasure chest of Art Deco architecture. And New York City, as well, is a plethora of Art Deco creations. Today, I’ll concentrate on the sights we enjoyed in the Big Apple.
The Chrysler Building
First of all, there’s the Chrysler Building, a magnificent structure of Art Deco influence. Whenever looking at a skyline photo of New York City, the Chrysler Building can be seen in juxtaposition with the Empire State Building. Such a great image is always seen while the closing credits run on the famous TV situation comedy Barney Miller.
Unfortunately, our trip was of a short duration. There were so many things I didn’t get to show my wife on her first trip to NYC. The main reason for this trip was so she could see all the famous Christmas decorations. I so wanted to share with her the beautiful exterior of Grand Central Terminal, as well as its lobby which displays Art Deco at its finest. And then we missed seeing Greenwich Village and the iconic Washington Square Arch. But during our one long day trudging the streets, we got to see the Bryant Park Winter Village, Radio City Music Hall the New York Public Library and the magnificent Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. Plus we saw many sights from the observation deck of the Empire State Building, including the Chrysler Building and the Flatiron Building.

The Library of all Libraries!
The aptly named Flatiron Building
As I noted, we missed so much. But, we have plans of returning, this time in the spring or summer because we sure ran into some of that famous New York winter cold! And though this isn’t the Art Deco I spoke of, I can’t help but share this final photo with you.
This is looking out from the window of our Times Square hotel towards the west. In the far distance you can see the Hudson River and New Jersey on the other side. But what I found so interesting was the building right out the window. One interesting thing is all the graffiti painted on the side, which is something else my city and New York share. But even more fascinating, if you notice, is the garden on top of the apartment building facing our hotel. What other way can those concrete-bound citizens enjoy nature?

I have moved a lot throughout my life so home has been many different places. I always feel best when I can sleep in my own bed even though it is the most uncomfortable mattress ever. It’s just a secure feeling I think.

I look at your beautiful photos and can’t believe I’ve never been to New York. Radio City Music Hall and Time Square would be my first stop! Your hotel view was nice. I have to wonder who is living in that penthouse suite with the garden!?

I agree, home is where the heart is, physically. Because you can be at home anywhere. 🙂 Christmas in New York is one of the best times – the lights, window displays and everyone is so happy and festive.

You got to see so many amazing buildings. I have always wanted to see Central Park and some of the buildings that they used to film Home Alone. I love that movie series.

We had the same problem when we visited NYC last year. Even hitting the highlights is probably a two week trip.
