It was a year ago today when we started our journey of 10,000 miles, a half-a-world away, to my hometown of General Santos City, Philippines to spend a month of much-needed vacation with our family and friends. It was a vacation that is one for the books and that’s why today I decided to reminisce.
We’re about to land in Chicago after departing from Asheville Regional Airport in North Carolina. My son took this photo. He had the window seat so he was able to get a good view of the skyline of Chicago and Lake Michigan.
CHICAGO O’HARE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
We passed by this amazing work of art or display inside the O’Hare International Airport on our way to our gate. We even saw a dinosaur display. Too bad I didn’t get to take a lot of pictures inside the airport because we were such in a hurry to reach our gate because we didn’t have enough time until our connecting flight to Tokyo, Japan.
At the gate and there’s the hubs talking to his bro while we were waiting for boarding.
On board our United Airlines flight to Tokyo.
HISTORY OF O’HARE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
As I’ve shared before, my husband is a huge history buff and he told us the story behind the O’Hare naming of the airport. It was named in honor of Edward Henry “Butch” O’Hare, an American naval aviator of the United States Navy, who on February 20, 1942, became the Navy’s first flying ace when he single-handedly attacked a formation of nine heavy bombers approaching his aircraft carrier. His heroic actions resulted in his being awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest honor for bravery. Also, as a tribute to Butch O’Hare, on September 19, 1949, the Chicago-area Orchard Depot Airport was renamed O’Hare International Airport. Unfortunately, it was done posthumously for he was killed in action on November 26, 1943. And the next time you find yourself at O’Hare International, give some thought to visiting Butch’s memorial displaying his statue and his Medal of Honor. It’s located between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
