After spending a couple of days in Atlanta to watch the Braves play and taking a day trip to Covington to visit the so-called Mystic Falls, off we headed to Savannah to continue our wonderful family summer vacation.
My sister-in-law raved so much about her trips to Savannah so this year I made sure to include it on our itinerary. We love visiting and exploring historical places and if you’re like us, Savannah is definitely a must-see for you.
Savannah is more or less a four hour drive from Atlanta. We arrived on a Friday afternoon and as you can see in this photo, it was gloomy. It was hot that day, but rain was in the forecast. But we still got to enjoy a little exploring that afternoon before the rain arrived that evening.
Where to Stay
It was our first time in Savannah so we chose to stay in the historic district so we would be close to all the must-see places that Savannah has to offer. And we sure did not regret that. We stayed at Hotel Indigo which is only a few steps from the City Market as well as River Street where shops and restaurants abound.
This photo was taken on Friday night when we had our dinner at the hotel’s restaurant. We went out to look for food, but all the restaurants that are close to the hotel were all packed and the waiting times were more than 30 minutes. We were so hungry our tummies couldn’t wait to be filled for more than a minute so we went back to the hotel and ate there. Good thing there was nobody there, but us. Yeah! More on that dinner here on the blog soon.
Where to Eat
My sister-in-law also mentioned about Paula Deen’s restaurant. I have seen some of her shows and knowing that she is a popular chef as well as a public figure, I told the hubs that we should go to her restaurant and sample the food. I knew for certain that their food would not disappoint, especially my hubs since he is a southern boy and the motto on their menu is “Put some SOUTH in your mouth” And I was so right about that. Really good food there. The name of the restaurant is The Lady & Sons and it was only walking distance from the hotel. We got kind of lost going there, but we found it eventually. More on that dinner here on the blog soon too.
What to Do
- Take a Historical Tour
My brother-in-law recommended that the best way to see Savannah and learn its history is by taking the trolley tour. So we took the Old Savannah Tours and he was so right. We learned so much about the history of Savannah and saw so much beauty in the historical buildings and squares and even those areas that were used as film locations. More about our tour soon.
We paid for the tour at the hotel since they accept payments there and a shuttle picked us up at the corner near the hotel and took us to the visitor’s center where the tour starts.
- Explore the Area on Foot
What I loved about Hotel Indigo is that it is right at the historic district so without a map, we just walked and walked and explored the streets of Savannah…wherever our feet would take us and saw a lot and even discovered that they offer carriage rides too. We didn’t take it though.
- Go to Tybee Island
If you’re done exploring Savannah, take a trip to Tybee Island. It is only a 30 minute drive from Savannah and it boasts so much beauty. You get to see the Atlantic Ocean from a beach there and dip your toes in it if you like.
The hubs jokingly calls me a Pacific Girl because I’m from the Philippines and one of his goals has always been for me to see the Atlantic Ocean. So after this little jaunt, he felt as if his mission was accomplished. Good boy, honey. Anyway, we took this trip before heading home. We didn’t stay long, but we did see a lot. More about Tybee Island soon.
It was definitely an interesting and enjoyable weekend that we have had in Savannah. Have you been there?

Savannah is wonderful! I’ve been twice, but I need to go again when I can really get out and see more of it. I have friends that live there, so I usually spend time with them instead of exploring too much.

What a fun place to visit! I’ve never been to Georgia, much less Savannah. This definitely looks like a place my family would enjoy. We’re not big travelers, tho, so I always dream!

It sounds beautiful. The Atlantic is supposed to be so much warmer than the Pacific. Did you find this to be true when you were there? At least down in the Florida part of the Atlantic is much warmer than the Pacific in Southern California.
Harry says
I guess it would depend on what time of the year you were there, but I’ve always found the Atlantic to be a little cool, and I’ve put my toes in the Atlantic from the coasts of Virginia down to Florida. I’ve never experienced the Pacific anywhere other than in the Philippines. But the Atlantic definitely gets warmer on to the east, off the coast of Africa; that’s where all the hurricanes begin their formation.

No, I’ve never been there, but it looks like you all enjoyed it. I have heard a lot about Savannah, though. I’m used to seeing lighthouses here on the coast of Maine, but it was surprising to see one there.
