After our full day of experiencing the beauty and history of Savannah, we returned to our hotel. That night, the weather forecast for the following day called for rain in the area so we told ourselves that we’d play it by ear about our plans for one more vacation adventure. Fortunately, my prayers were answered and the sun was shining that Sunday morning. So off we headed to Tybee Island, not far from Savannah, to finish our wonderful family summer vacation before finally heading home.
Tybee Island is such an easy and short drive from Savannah. It took us about 30 minutes to get there. It actually felt like we were there in a heart beat. We didn’t plan on sampling the food since we wanted to be on the road around noon, heading home. But I did want to see the lighthouse. That was the only thing that I wanted to see, but I was surprised to see more which was definitely a delight.
Tybee Island Visitor Center
We decided to go to the Visitor Center first and we’re so glad we did. The nice lady there told us a lot including tips and tricks, and even gave us directions towards the lighthouse. She was very interesting for she shared with us her early life which included living here in our area of North Carolina. And don’t you just love the color of the Visitor Center? It’s like cotton candy!
Tybee Island Light Station and Museum
After that wonderful talk with the lady at the Visitor Center, off we headed to the lighthouse.
You can tour the lighthouse and see the island from up top. But we decided to just continue exploring what’s around it, after we were done gazing at its magnificence.
Tybee Island Museum Battery Garland
We had to pay for parking close to the lighthouse which was $2.00 before exploring and came across this. It was such a nice surprise to see this museum. More so, for my history-buff hubby. You can have a tour of the Battery Garland too.
North Beach
On the right of the Battery Garland is the entrance to North Beach. What an exciting moment it was for me to finally see the Atlantic Ocean. Like my husband said previously on my Savannah post, I am a Pacific girl and had only saw the Pacific Ocean until that day.
The beach was packed on that hot and gorgeous summer day.
Can you spy the Hubs? There he is busy taking photos…like me.
And you can see the lighthouse from the beach.
Enjoying a little shade while breathing the fresh breeze coming from the Atlantic Ocean and soaking up all the beauty that the beach had to offer.
Tybee Island is such a beautiful island with a lot to see and enjoy. We may have not sampled the food, but we sure enjoyed what we saw. So make sure to visit Tybee Island if you visit Savannah. You’re going to love it, trust me!

A trip that packs in some tourism with history and some relaxing time on the beach is a great one for us. We will have to put it on our to do list.

I’m so thrilled the weather worked out! It looks like you had such a day! My dad collects lighthouses so they have a special place in my heart.

I think they filmed Outlander in Scotland. 🙂

I live in Maine and last summer/early fall about this time, hubby and I toured a few of our coast’s lighthouses. This one you visited is so pretty and a quintessential quaint lighthouse. It’s interesting when lighthouses also have forts nearby – same as here in Maine.
