Since our son became a teen, we don’t go trick-or-treating anymore because he said he’s already too old for it. So gone are the days where we’d go house to house in this popular Asheville neighborhood to trick or treat and see kids and entire families dressed up in their fun, cute and spooky Halloween costumes. But those fun memories we made will always be in the books.
But Halloween can still be fun for the whole family even without trick-or-treating. And I’m sharing five fun ways below.
1) Have a Halloween Movie Marathon
Hubby has already started binge watching Halloween movies since last week. There were a lot of Halloween films being shown on cable now so he has recorded a lot on our DVR.
I am not at all into Horror films because I get scared watching them, but I couldn’t help but watch what he was watching. I must admit though that I have to cover my eyes in some of those gory scenes or bury my face in Hubby’s shoulder. Yes, I have to snuggle beside him when we watch horror films because I am a scaredy cat like that. 🙂
2) Prepare Halloween Treats
Don’t you just love those fun and cute Halloween treats? There are the mini donut spiders, the many-eyed monster cupcake or those yummy mummies. Our son may have graduated from trick-or-treating, but he sure has not graduated from those spooky yet cute Halloween treats.
3) Tell Ghost Stories
We tell ghost stories from time to time, even on nights other than Halloween. But I think it’s more creepy when it’s done on Halloween itself.
I remember when I was young, we would all gather at the dining table, my siblings and our parents, sometimes with just a candle lit. Dad was the storyteller and he always had a ghost story to tell from when he was young. I still remember some of those stories he told us and I have also shared some of those stories that I remember with the Hubs and our son.
4) Have a Family Game Night
The game doesn’t have to be a scary; one like monopoly, maybe? Or you can make it scary if you have a creative idea to do it.
5) Go Out to Eat Dinner
I love food. We love food. So going out to dinner on Halloween is definitely a great idea. And you never know, you might see a ghost there at the restaurant enjoying a meal too.
How are you going to celebrate Halloween? However you are going to celebrate it, may you have a Happy Halloween!

These all sound like great alternatives to trick-or-treating! It’s supposed to rain here Halloween night so an at home scary movie night sounds great to me!

We love family game night. That’s a great idea. My kids are older (teens) with one that is 10 (the only trick or treater)

Great ideas! We moved to Florida from Boston, where Trick or Treating was huge. Now in Florida, we haven’t been able to find an area that does Trick or Treating besides the downtown areas and its over before dark which leaves my older kids missing the New England Halloween fun. I’m going to make a fun movie night for when we get home this year.

Having a game night is a great idea. Watching movies is what we usually end up doing.
