Other than having a flower garden outside which I so look forward to start taking care of in the spring, I also have some indoor plants that I enjoy taking care of. I’ve had these plants for years although I must admit that I had been unlucky with some indoor plants in the past like the succulents; they died on me. I may have to try my luck again with succulents this spring.
But I didn’t start having these plants until I got here in the U.S. My Mom, who had a flower garden back in my hometown in the Philippines, also didn’t have indoor plants so I had no idea of how to take care of them. I had to do my research on how to take care of these plants and these are the things that I learned.
Snake Plant
These plants are very low-maintenance and are considered air purifiers.
Care tips:
- Choose a pot that allows for good drainage.
- Allow soil to dry between waterings.
- Avoid getting leaves wet when you water.
- Place your snake plant in indirect light.
- Fertilize during the growing season.
Orchid
Orchids may look so fragile but they actually require little care.
Care tips:
- They need ample water. Water them just before they go dry.
- They need adequate humidity, about 50 to 70%.
- Fertilize once per month while they’re flowering.
- Do not put in direct sunlight.
- Cut off stems when flower dies.
Hyacinth Bulb in Water
I bought this at the store a few years ago and I was amazed of how many times it flowered in the spring and summer and even in the winter.
Care tips:
- Make sure the water doesn’t touch the bottom of the bulb.
- Change the water twice per week.
- Place the hyacinth to a bright spot for it to fully bloom.
- Do not place in direct sunlight.
Lucky Bamboo
Such a fascinating plant that grows in water.
Care tips:
- Water once a week.
- Keep out of direct sunlight.
- Remove dead or yellow leaves.
Indoor plants almost always use the same ways when it comes to taking care of them. And most of them require little maintenance yet give so much beauty to a space.
Do you have indoor plants too?

These are pretty! I wish I could grow things. I tend to kill plants. I don’t mean to, it’s just what always happens.

Your plants look healthy and happy. I can’t keep anything alive no matter how hard I try LOL. Maybe if I take a few pointers from you I can keep them alive.

I do so much better with outdoor plants. I once had an orchid that did well for several months and then died. I need to try again.

Ha! My husband and I need help in this department. We have definitely killed a few plants since moving into our house (June 2018)… They were left here and we are newbies to keeping plants alive, LOL!

Oh, wow! I didn’t know you can grow warermelon inside the house.
So many plants that add life and oxygen to any home. I know I should have some in my house but I never have much luck with them
That hyacinth looks like it came from Trader Joes! Is that possible? I love all the plants you highlighted. Beautiful!
Thank you, Terri. I got the hyacinth from Aldi. 🙂
When it comes to indoor plants, I might be the worst. We have 2 that we’ve kept alive for almost a year. I think it’s a new record.
I love the indoor plants. They the best decoration item during the cold season! And I really need all the hacks I can get. Thanks!
The Snake plant is the only kind of Snake I would want to be around because I am deathly afraid of real snacks. As for Orchids I have always wanted a plant and thanks to your tips I think I will get one for Easter.
LOL. Same here, Glenda. Totally afraid of snakes!
I miss my snake plant. Mine sadly bit the dust and I haven’t gotten a replacement. Snake plants are my favorite, I love to surround myself with plants in my dark basement home office to make it a bit more cheerful.
I have horrible luck with keeping plants alive. I think it’s because I like to keep my house on the cool side. Do you think that may be why? I wish I could fill my whole house with plants but I’m afraid!
Hi Nancy! As I’ve read, the best temperature for indoor plants is 70-80 at daytime and 65 at night. But it depends on plants too. Some of them can tolerate 55. You can try with one houseplant first, but make sure to do your research on how to care for them. That was what I did. 🙂
These are wonderful tips, thanks for sharing I have orchid. I don’t want them to die. I will use your tips.
I am definitely a plant lover – however over the years my indoor plants and outdoor plant life ratio hasn’t been that great. I am truly excited to see what a little tender and more nutured care might do. Thanks for the tips
