We were on our way home from spending time with my girlfriend and her family in Baltimore, Maryland, when my husband decided to take us to Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg, Maryland. It was on the path on our way home so it was perfect.
The husband had been here before with his friend and he wanted to show us as well as tell us about its history. I’m so glad he did because the story and the place are both fascinating.
Welcome to Antietam
My husband is such a history buff. He already shared about the history of Antietam National Battlefield before, but he didn’t get to share pictures so I’m sharing some of them today.
It has been seven years since we visited and as you can see, my son was still so young.
Park Map and Key to the Battlefield
As I’ve mentioned, Hubby had been here before so we didn’t really need a map. He knew how to navigate the battlefield like a tourist guide. But it was interesting to check the map and all the spots that you need to see and explore.
Dunker Church
Such an interesting piece of architecture in the battlefield. The canyons really fascinated my son. Do you spot him? 🙂
Sunken Road
It was such a beautiful spring day when we visited and the huge amount of land looked amazing. I can’t imagine how horrible it looked like during the war.
War Department Observation Tower
The gate of the tower was closed when we visited so we didn’t get to go up and check from up there. On second note, I am not sure and I can’t remember if they were allowing people inside the tower.
Burnside Bridge
How beautiful is that bridge? And there’s my boys! This bridge was located a little far from the visitor center and we drove a few minutes to get here.
Funny thing, I had a moment here that I will never forget which Hubby calls as my Antietam moment. I lost my sunglasses here…or so I thought. The thing is, I thought I lost it when the fact is I was actually wearing them on top of my head! Haha! It was my son who enlightened me that I was wearing them. That was too funny!
Antietam National Battlefield is such an amazing place to visit and explore.
Have you been?
