I have to follow up on Lynndee’s last post where she shared some of her all-time favorite movies. She mentions having watched them millions of times and will continue watching them. Being her Hubby, I know this is true, though I’ve just watched these particular movies thousands of times since we came together…(“,) And, of course, saying millions and thousands of times is speaking metaphorically. Still, all of us have our favorites in life and have a way of constantly revisiting them.
As for me, speaking metaphorically, I have millions of all-time favorite movies. And seeing that I’m a wee bit older than Lynndee, my choices cover a longer time span than her picks. One thing about the movies I constantly rewatch is that many of them are in black and white, truly making them moldy oldies by Lynndee’s standards, just like the moldy oldie vinyl records I have.
From Here to Eternity
I could go on for hours about the movies I love, but I’ll have to keep it simple here. I have written detailed posts about some of these movies. The favorite I’ll share here is From Here to Eternity, a true classic with an all-star cast, though many of the actors had yet to reach the class of being a well-known star. But now over sixty years later, if one mentions the name of Burt Lancaster, Ernest Borgnine, Montgomery Clift or Frank Sinatra, us moldy oldie movie watchers know who is being spoken of.
The Wild Bunch
Another great fave of mine is The Wild Bunch, also featuring Ernest Borgnine. This movie set up the shoot-em-up bang-bang movies that we’ve seen ever since its release, for it was as graphic as had ever been filmed. Borgnine’s character in this one is just as rough and tough as the sadistic part he played in From Here to Eternity. Yet, one of his earliest successes was winning the Academy Award for Best Actor in the romantic movie Marty, displaying a totally different personality than he’d portrayed in
From Here to Eternity just a couple of years earlier.
Humphrey Bogart Movies
Then there’s my love of any Bogie movie. And by Bogie, I mean Humphrey Bogart. Of course there’s the classics, The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, High Sierra and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. But the real love story in Bogie’s life wasn’t told in Casablanca but in the movies he did with Lauren Bacall, an actress he met on set filming To Have and Have Not,leading to their marriage and three more films together, The Big Sleep, Dark Passage and Key Largo. Truly a Hollywood story which would have made a great love movie.
Field of Dreams
And those are just a few of the movies I love. Other than The Wild Bunch, all of them are black and white moldy oldies, and even The Wild Bunch is now 50-years old. In passing, I do have to mention the movie Field of Dreams, which ties in with my love of baseball as well as fantasy.
The Shawshank Redemption
Then there’s The Shawshank Redemption, tying in with my love of the works of Steven King.
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Of course, not to be forgotten is Clint Eastwood’s The Outlaw Josey Wales.
The Magnificent Seven
And Steve McQueen’s The Magnificent Seven, another favorite western.
Vanishing Point
And saving the best for last, an all-time cult favorite, which I fell in love with as a hot-rodding teen, Vanishing Point. If you’ve never seen this one or are unfamiliar with it, you’ve just got to see it to understand how a car-crazy teen would fall in love with the movie.
These are just a few of the millions of movies I love, ones I’ll forever watch when they hit the screen.
