Finishing college and earning a bachelor’s degree was a goal I made for myself, and it was my parents who supported me financially and in all other aspects that made my dream come true. It made my parents proud when I accomplished that goal and made me happy because I knew exactly what the importance of getting a higher education was.
Here are some of those important factors:
1) More Job Opportunities
Most jobs require higher learning – not necessarily a degree but credentials that show certificates or training from a university or community college.
2) Learn New Skills
Getting a higher education means more wisdom. You learn and develop skills which can be used for your future job.
3) Improve Self-confidence
Knowing that you have learned more wisdom and mastered more skills could surely add to your confidence–confidence in having the knowledge to tackle the next chapter of your life, which is to get the job you want and know that you can now perform it at a high level of competence, leading to a greater level of self-esteem.
My son is an upcoming junior in high school at a North Carolina school and I always encourage him to reach for higher goals in his education because of these reasons. He can either choose to go to a public university or a community college. Whichever one he chooses, we’re here to give him our 100% support.
North Carolina has amazing postsecondary institutions, and two of them are located here in our city of Asheville, a public university and a community college, respectively.
1) University of North Carolina Asheville (UNC Asheville)
2) Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College (AB Tech)
Speaking of higher education, Higher Ed Works is an organization that supports public higher education in North Carolina. Their goal is to keep North Carolina higher education systems well-funded, affordable and accessible so that individuals can get valuable higher education credentials. Without a doubt, higher education can improve economic mobility and change lives, especially in rural counties.
North Carolina is among three states to have a unique constitutional mandate which requires the North Carolina General Assembly to provide all citizens with affordable higher education opportunities. Our constitution reads; “The General Assembly shall provide that the benefits of the University of North Carolina and other public institutions of higher education, as far as practicable, be extended to the people of the State free of expense.”
We need to make sure our state keeps that promise.

As my parent always said, education is the only thing that they can give that nobody can get from me. That is why, I gave all my best and work hard to finished my degree because having a degree gives you a lot of opportunities.
Now, that I am a parent too, I am wishing that my kids will do the same to finish their studies with a higher education.
