Nothing is more satisfying than a freshly baked bread. But I never thought of trying to bake bread because I thought it would be difficult. Then a few days ago, our neighbor, Andrew, asked the Hubs if we would like a starter to make sourdough bread. I had no clue what we were getting ourselves into, but the idea of homemade sourdough bread sounded like such a delicious idea to me so I told the Hubs to say yes.
Other than the starter, he also gave us a jar of yeast and instant potatoes plus the recipes for the sourdough bread and starter along with helpful tips that sure were helpful because it was our first time to make bread after all.
Much to my delight, sourdough bread is so easy to make. I only had to mix all the ingredients, stir and let sit overnight. The following day, it was ready to go in the oven.
I did cut the ingredients in half because there’s only three of us and I don’t want to make a big batch.
And with our good neighbor’s permission, here is the recipe for you to try.
Starter:
Mix everything together:
- 1 cup warm water
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 3 tbsp. instant potatoes
Ingredients:
- 6 cups bread flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 tsp. salt
- 1 tbsp. yeast
- 1-1/2 cups warm water
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup starter
Instructions:
- Stir together all bread ingredients in a big bowl. The dough will be stiff.
- Cover and let it sit out at room temperature overnight until it’s fluffy.
- In the morning, stir down and shape into rolls or loaves of bread.
- Place in greased pans and let rise until doubled in size.
- Bake at 375 degrees Celsius for 18 to 20 minutes or until lightly browned.
- Enjoy!
Half of the recipe mixture created this one loaf of bread. Look how delicious that looks? It was fantastic and I can’t wait to make another one.

Freshly baked bread is one of my top 10 scents! Ha! I love the smell so much. Of course, eating a warm slice with fresh butter is also at the top of my list.
