In what has definitely been a year of medical chaos, Major League Baseball certainly faced many obstacles in having a season. And after a shaky start, a season indeed was had, though not the usual season us fans are accustomed to.
First off, the usual season of 162 games was shortened to only 60 with the season beginning with the first games being played in the last week of July. There were several rule changes made to speed the game up, but I’ll not try to explain them. For sure, I wasn’t happy with everything about this season, however, it was still great to see the players on the field again and it actually turned out to be an exciting season.
National League East Champions
My Atlanta Braves pulled it off again, winning the National League East for the third consecutive year. Still, that’s nothing compared to the feat they accomplished beginning in 1991 when they won the title for 14 straight years, something never done by any professional sport team. Of those 14 seasons, they made it to the World Series five times, winning, unfortunately, only one of them. So it truly is our year, our turn in the championship circle for this is without a doubt a fantastic team.
Freddie Freeman
The Braves All-Star 1st baseman Freddie Freeman is on top of the list for choice as this years National League Most Valuable Player. He finished the season in 2nd place for the NL batting title with a .341 average, just 10 points behind Juan Soto’s .351. His banner year also included a long-awaited first, a grand slam home run after playing for 10 years in the majors. And not only did he have that one, he hit his second one just a couple of days later. There’s no doubt that he’s the most valuable player on this Braves team and deserves to be named the most valuable player for the entire league.
Marcell Ozuna
Another great player on this years team is Marcell Ozuna, basically a utility player who mostly filled the role of the teams designated hitter this season, a position added to the National League during this Covid year. He came within only 13 points of winning the triple crown, batting .338 for the season while leading the NL with 18 home runs and 56 runs batted in.
This year’s team also had quite a historic game, defeating the Miami Marlins 29-9, setting a franchise record for runs scored as well as setting a National League record for runs scored in the modern era, beginning in 1900, falling just one run short of tying the Major League record for number of runs scored in a game, the 30 scored by the Texas Ranges in 2007.
Adam Duvall
One Braves player who had a super fantastic day was outfielder Adam Duvall who had 3 home runs and 9 RBIs, the second time he’d hit three home runs, taking place within an eight-day period. Ironically, the first time he did it was the day after Marcell Ozuna had a three home run game, the first time in baseball history that two players from the same team had three home run games in consecutive days.
So it has been a historic year for these Braves, and more history is hopefully yet to be made.
And at this very moment, it’s time for me to cease and desist in writing and go watch Game 1 of the playoffs and watch my Braves against the Cincinnati Reds.
Here’s hoping for victory #1 on the way to another World Series Championship!
