Before we reached the summit of Mount Mitchell and enjoyed a scenic drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway, we first stopped at Vance Birthplace, a State Historic Site . It wasn’t in the plan, but we passed by it on our way to our destination so we stopped and stayed awhile.
I have been to this place before…a long time ago when I was still new here in the U.S.; we initially made the visit to help our son do historical research for a school project.
It is one of the historic sites here in North Carolina and it is located 12 miles north of downtown Asheville, in the Reems Creek Valley area near Weaverville.
This place was a mountain plantation and shows you the life in the early 1800s. The structures include a tool shed, a loom house, a smoke house, a corn crib and a spring house.
Zebulon Vaird Vance was twice governor of North Carolina, once during the Civil War and later during the reconstruction era.
He was also twice elected to the United States Senate. However, the first time he wasn’t allowed to serve due to the restrictions placed on ex-Confederates by the 14th Amendment seeing that he had served in the Confederate Army. But on the second time he was seated and served until his death.
They have a visitor center where you can explore the exhibit and learn more about this part of history.
There was nobody outside that day but me and the hubs. We didn’t go inside those houses. We just enjoyed ourselves looking at them from the outside. It was such an interesting and beautiful sight.
I’ve seen pictures before wherein those houses were blanketed with snow and they just looked magical.
This is the area fronting the houses. It reminds me of a farm with all those hay bales but with no farm crops or farm animals.
It is free to visit Vance Birthplace. They have annual events, guided tours and other events throughout the year. You can visit their website to learn more.

I have always been impressed with the way historic locations still seem to have that authenticity to their buildings and surroundings. Seeing the way of the world back then is very humbling.
