Maintaining a good credit score is crucial because having a good credit score means it will be easier for you to get loans and credit. You never know when you are going to need to get those things so it’s always great to think ahead.
I’m happy to say that I have an excellent credit score. My husband has a good credit score as well. We didn’t have a hard time getting approved to get a new car because of that. We were also able to use our credit cards to fund our trips to my home country, the Philippines, for a much-needed vacation and then to attend my mother’s funeral the following year. But getting a good credit score and maintaining it takes work. And today I’m sharing the ways on how we did it.
1) Spend Wisely
Don’t spend more that you can afford. Know your budget. I know sometimes we want to acquire some things that we don’t really need. And if you do decide to spend, make sure you have extra money for that “want”. If you don’t, then save for it until later or until your budget tells you it’s safe to splurge.
2) Don’t Overload Your Credit Cards and Push It Against its Credit Limit
I made a spreadsheet in my computer using Microsoft Excel to keep our expenses in check. There I place all the total amount of the receipts that me and my husband have spent, from bills to groceries and all the extras. With that, I know how much we’ve spent and how much more we can spend for that month.
3) Pay Your Bills on Time and Slowly Eliminate Debt
Make sure you pay your credit cards on time every month. If possible, pay it in full and eliminate the total debt. Or, if possible, pay more than the minimum due to drive down the total balance.
4) Keep an Eye on Your Credit Score
Both my husband and I check our credit scores regularly. It’s important to check it in case there are errors, etc.
These are the things that worked for us when it comes to maintaining our good credit scores and we’ve done it for years. But I am also aware that there are individuals who are struggling to maintain things at an acceptable level. If you are one of those people who are in the situation of being on the lower rung of credit scores, I suggest checking out Lexington Law.

I have never checked my credit score. I think I was told years ago that any checks would be bad for your score. Perhaps things have changed now and it should be something I’m doing. Thank you for the advice.

Sadly, most people don’t learn about the importance of good credit when they are in school. They do not learn it until after they need good credit for a job, a house, or a car.
