Palitaw is one of the most popular snacks in the Philippines and one of my favorites. I remember enjoying it when I was a little girl. I also cherish gobbling it as an adult. 🙂 That’s how much I love it.
But I’d never tried preparing it until a few days ago. We’d just always buy it or order it from small businesses in my hometown.
So what made me decide to finally try preparing it? I thought the ingredients for this delicious snack were not available here in the U.S. until I came across this Palitaw recipe by a US-based food blogger. I then searched for a Filipino store online and much to my delight, they have the main ingredient for sale which is the glutinous rice flour.
Other than the glutinous rice flour, you can find all the other ingredients in U.S. supermarkets.
Here’s how to do it.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups glutinous rice flour
- 1/4 cup sesame seeds
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 cup sweetened coconut flakes
- water
Instructions:
- Toast sesame seeds in a pan over medium heat until lightly brown. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
- Once sesame seeds are already cool, mix in the sugar. Set aside.
- In a bowl, combine glutinous rice flour and 1 cup of water and mix until a dough is formed.
- Shape the dough into balls and flatten into oval disks about 1/4 inch thick. Makes around 15 disks.
- In a large pot, bring water to a boil.
- Individually drop the disks into the boiling water, 5 at a time. Don’t overcrowd the pot.
- Cook for about 3-4 minutes or until the disk floats to the surface.
- Remove the disks from the water and drain well.
- Let the disks cool on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper.
- Roll the disks the coconut flakes until fully coated.
- Then sprinkle the disks with the sesame seeds and sugar mixture.
- Enjoy!
I was so happy with the result and really enjoyed the Palitaw that I made. My husband and son were not as crazy about it like me, but no problem. I had most of the Palitaw to myself. 🙂
Have you tried having Palitaw or Sweet Flat Rice Cake before?
Happy Foodie Friday!

This seems like a real tasty treat. I love sesame seeds and coconut but have never baked with that flour but it seems like it is worth making

Glad you were able to make “palitaw” there, it’s really hard when you’re missing a certain food and the ingredients are not available.

I haven’t tried it, but would you compare it to a cookie? or a cake? I am not getting a sense of what it would be. Looks yummy though!

The dough is more sticky than anything. So it’s definitely not like a cookie nor a cake, although it’s called a cake. 🙂

These look interesting. I’ll have to give them a try but I will leave the coconut off. I’m not a fan of shredded coconut.
