As I mentioned last week in my “Things To Do in Charleston” post, there was so much to tell and share about each of those places that we saw and enjoyed. So I’m going to tell more about each of them and, today, I’m starting with Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens.
Located in Mount Pleasant, a suburb of Charleston, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens is a must to visit if you make a trip to Charleston, South Carolina, especially if you are into history. We love visiting historical places and learning about history, but those are not the only reasons why we actually visited this amazing plantation during my birthday trip to this historic area.
Avenue of Oaks
This 3/4 mile long stretch of live oak trees popularly known as the “Avenue of Oaks” is such a breathtaking sight. The trees draped with Spanish moss were planted between 1743 and 1843, arranged in two evenly spaced rows.
The birthday girl. 🙂
The Mansion
The other reason why we visited the plantation was because of this house. This was Allie’s summer home in the movie, “The Notebook.” We love the movie so it was fascinating to see this house up close.
Our son never heard of the movie, but he enjoyed his time learning about the history of this place.
The hubs and I toured the inside of the house, but taking photos were not allowed. It’s actually still a private residence, occasionally lived in. And one major rule of taking the tour was that you must wipe your feet before entering. It was beautiful and elegant inside filled with things that are original to the house.
It drizzled a little bit while we were there so the hubs and I sat on the rocking chairs at the patio while enjoying the beauty of the house and the scenery surrounding it.
The view from where we were sitting.
The Slave Cabins
Considered to be the most important historic structures in the district, these slave cabins are made of bricks and date between 1790 and 1810.
We went to each of these cabins and learned a lot for each cabin spoke of a particular theme in the history of slavery.
The cabins are pretty small, but there was not many people checking the plantation that day so we had the cabins all to ourselves.
They have televisions showing videos telling stories about the history of these cabins.
The Cotton Dock
There’s the hubs reading some interesting facts about the cotton dock. It was here that the bales of cotton produced on the plantation were shipped across the river to Charleston.
A storm was coming while we were there, but it didn’t stop us from enjoying the beauty of the marsh and the sound of water in the Ashley River. I could stay on this spot all day.
The Cotton Gin Building
You can just check this house from the outside since it’s not available for inside viewing. Not yet anyway. The guy at the information center told us the building is being renovated. But it was here that the harvested cotton was processed and prepared for shipment.
The Stables
You would see the stables to your right while driving through Avenue of Oaks on your way to the house.
Such beautiful horses.
Can you tell how the hubs was mesmerized by the horse?
Boone Hall Plantation is located only 3 miles from the hotel so it was perfect. We spent half of the day at the plantation and really enjoyed it. I would certainly love to go back.
Have you been to Boone Hall Plantation? How was your experience?
