Thank you First Alert for sponsoring this post.
Our family’s safety is of the utmost importance to us. We always make sure that we cover all the bases. One of the things that was on our priority list was installing smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms all throughout the house. Every bedroom has an alarm, as well as the living room and dining area.
We have seen tragic stories on TV because of a house fire with smoke alarms either not working or no smoke alarms at all. Same stories with carbon monoxide poisoning. It is a tragedy that could have been potentially avoided if preventive safety measures had been taken with the installation and maintenance of proper fire and CO equipment.
Alarms should be installed in every bedroom and on every level of your house. It is also necessary to change the alarms’ batteries on a bi-annual basis, every 6 months, and test alarms regularly to make sure they are in good working order. One of the tricks to ensure you remember to change the batteries on a regular basis is to plan on doing the changes during Daylight Saving Time. As for testing the alarms, my husband does that on the 1st of each month, faithfully.
Did you know that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms don’t last forever? They need to be replaced at least every 10 years. There’s a manufacture date on the back of the alarm that you can check. If your alarm is 10 years old or older, it is time to replace it.
When it’s time to replace, upgrade to First Alert’s 10-Year Sealed Battery Combination Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm. This alarm provides 2-in-1 protection against both smoke and carbon monoxide, plus it eliminates the need for battery replacements for a decade. That would be a decade of peace and quiet from those late-night, low battery chirps. Not to mention, it saves you time and energy.
My husband installed our First Alert 10-Year Sealed Battery Combination Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm in our master’s bedroom.
That being said, it is also very important for every family to have an emergency escape plan in case of fire or CO emergency– what to do and where to go so a head count can be made to ensure all are safely out. Our house is just a single level, so we already know our escape route. But for those who have 2 or more levels, make sure you discuss your escape route and your plans with your family. Practice your escape plan twice a year with your family so every member knows exactly what to do because sometimes people panic when under pressure.
How about you? Have you installed smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in your home? If not, it’s time to place it on the top of your to-do list. But if you already have it covered, do check if your alarms need replacing. When replacing, go grab the First Alert 10-Year Sealed Battery Combination Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm today!

We make sure we check our alarms often. Our house isn’t that big but we know how important it is to keep track of them. I also do not feel it hurts to have a reminder like your post to keep people on task. This is an important thing to remember!

I always make sure to keep our smoke detectors in good working order. After my sisters home caught fire, it made me realize how fires can literally happen to anyone and I won’t take a chance of not being prepared.
