I came across this salt pork at the supermarket and thought of trying it. Back then, I didn’t know exactly what it was and how to prepare it but it looked like pork belly or bacon to me. The hubs said it looked to him what was called fat back, here in the south. So, I grabbed a pack and did my research later on.
Salt pork is cured pork belly that isn’t smoked. Pork belly is common back in my hometown, although it wasn’t cured. And the only place I get to shop for the pork belly I’m familiar with is at an the Asian store so it was a delight to find this kind of pork belly at the supermarket.
They are already sliced into about 1/2 inch and I thought the best way to prepare them is of course to use my current favorite kitchen appliance – the air fryer. You can find my air fryer on this post here – a gift that I got from the hubs last year.
This is only the first batch. I did two batches because you are not supposed to over crowd the air fryer for them to cook well.
Here’s how I prepared them. And you don’t need any other ingredient other than the meat itself.
Ingredient
- 1 pack (12 oz.) Cured Uncooked Sliced Salt Pork
Instructions
- Preheat air fryer to 400 °F.
- Spray air fryer with oil.
- Place pork slices in one layer. Do not over crowd.
- Cook for 13-15 minutes. Flip the salt pork slices halfway.
- Serve!
And as always, we enjoyed this air fryer salt pork with steamed brown rice and some vegetables. They were crunchy and so good.
There are other dishes that can be prepared with salt pork like what we do with pork belly back home. We sometimes use it as an ingredient in sautés or stews, just like the hubs’ mom used fat back in her southern recipes.
Have you tried salt pork before? How did you prepare it?
Happy Foodie Friday, friends!
