Our plan that Sunday was just to visit Mom’s grave. My brother and his family was there, my sister and her family was there, too, plus Dad, and of course, the three of us. It wasn’t in our plan to enjoy a delicious Filipino dessert called Buko Halo afterwards. Thanks to my brother-in-law for thinking of doing so. And he knew a place that serves a delicious one in the city.
Buko (coconut) halo (pronounced like hah-lo rather than hay-low; it means “mix”) is a popular Filipino dessert that is basically a halo-halo that is served on a coconut shell.
Halo-halo is a cold dessert that is made up of crushed ice, evaporated milk, ube (purple yam) jam, sweetened kidney beans, coconut strips, sago, gulaman (agar), pinipig, boiled taro, flan, and slices of root preserves.
This is one of the best desserts to have especially when you’re in a tropical country. And with it being served on a coconut shell, it doesn’t get more tropical than that, does it?
This serving is good for two people, unless you want it all to yourself! LOL. I shared this with my husband and the rest of the family shared theirs with their partners as well.
And there we all are after cooling off with the delicious Buko Halo.
If you ever visit my home country, the Philippines, and you love desserts, make sure you grab yourself some delicious Buko Halo. It will not only satisfy your sweet tooth, it will also help you beat the heat.
