The United States is simply teeming with geological wonders, breathtaking cities and rare
experiences. And, as this diverse country covers such a vast area, the open roads are the
perfect way to explore all it has to offer. Whether you’re planning a road trip or basing
yourself in one of the US’s many incredible destinations, heading out in the car will deliver
you effortlessly to endless landscapes and attractions. But which should you include in your
itinerary?
In this post, we propose three must-visit attractions that promise an unforgettable adventure
in the USA.
Pacific Coast Highway, California
The Pacific Coast Highway is one of the most scenic drives in the world, stretching for 500
miles along the stunning California coastline. From the vibrant city of San Francisco to the
sun-drenched beaches of San Diego, this route provides breathtaking views of the Pacific
Ocean as you pass by a multitude of cliffs and picturesque towns.
While the total drive time is around 10-12 hours without stops, there are plenty of attractions
and amenities along the way to stretch your trip over multiple days. It’s not only a visual
feast, but also offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventures.
A key stopping point is the charming coastal town of Carmel, where you can enjoy whale
watching, browse art galleries and taste this region’s finest wines. Or, if you fancy spotting
whales from the comfort of your car, keep a keen eye on the ocean as you pass over the
Bixby Creek Bridge.
When you need to stretch your legs, be sure to spend some time exploring Pfeiffer Big Sur
State Park, a stunning locale filled with redwood forests, hidden beaches, and majestic
waterfalls.
Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina and Virginia
The Blue Ridge Parkway winds its way through the rugged Appalachian Mountains,
connecting Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to Great Smoky Mountains National Park
in North Carolina with 469 miles of road through lush forests and rolling hills.
Along the way, you can explore charming small towns, stop for scenic hikes, and immerse
yourself in the rich folklore of the region. Autumn is an ideal time to visit, as the fall foliage
transforms the landscape into a vibrant tapestry of colors.
For history buffs, there are numerous sites to visit along the parkway, including Civil War
battlefields, historic homes, and cultural heritage centers. And for those seeking a culinary
adventure, the region is known for its delicious barbecue and moonshine tastings.
The Blue Ridge Parkway also offers the chance to spot wildlife such as black bears, white-
tailed deer, and wild turkeys.
Route 66
Known as the “Mother Road”, Route 66 is an iconic American highway that represents the
quintessential road trip experience. Stretching from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica,
California, this historic route passes through eight states and takes travelers on a journey
back in time. You’ll encounter plenty of quirky roadside attractions, vintage motels, and
classic diners steeped in nostalgia.
Route 66 is also a cultural melting pot, with influences from Native American, Hispanic, and
cowboy cultures. As you visit the Cadillac Ranch in Texas, the Petrified Forest in Arizona,
and the neon-lit streets of Albuquerque, New Mexico, take the time to explore the different
regions and interact with the locals to learn about their unique histories and traditions.
For an authentic experience, you could even consider renting a classic car or motorcycle to
cruise along this historic route. And, of course, don’t forget to capture your journey by taking
plenty of photos and journaling – these memories will last a lifetime.
Discover America
Exploring these attractions by car allows you the freedom to follow your own pace, uncover
hidden gems, and create cherished memories on the open road. Whether it’s the majestic
coastlines, serene mountains, or historic highways, each journey promises a unique
adventure filled with unmissable attractions and unforgettable scenery.
