One thing that I look forward to doing in the spring is shopping for plants for my flower garden. I started my flower garden six years ago and I buy some every year to add to the garden. I usually just check the garden centers at the supermarkets or home improvement stores, but this time I decided to visit a greenhouse.
My sister-in-law was the one who introduced me to this greenhouse, called Painters Greenhouse, that is located in the nearby town of Old Fort here in North Carolina. It’s more or less 30 miles from Asheville. She took me there in 2012 and we had a blast plant shopping. She loves plants too, as much as I do, so the greenhouse is a heaven for the both of us.
But there are tips and tricks in making the most of your visit to a greenhouse.
Know When To Go
They are open most of the year, but their hours vary, depending on the season. And although it’s already springtime, they are also not open the whole week. Their hours also vary during weekdays and during the weekends so make sure to check the website first to see if they’re open. We were planning to go on a Monday, but gladly I checked their website first before leaving or we would have ended up with a sad face because they are closed on Mondays.
Know What Plants To Buy
My flower gardens are located in shaded ares – some in partial shade and some in deep shade. Even our front porch where I have my hanging plants is also shaded. So before I shop for plants, I make sure to know what plants are suitable for my garden. The greenhouse is huge and you would surely be amazed of the amount of plants that they have – from perennials, to annuals to succulents and bushes, etc. They have it all!
Know Your Budget
Being a plant lover, I can definitely lose my mind and spend a ton at this plant haven. So I must set a budget or I’ll end up going home broke.
Take Your Time and Enjoy
There is so much beauty in a greenhouse for your eyes to feast on so take your time. I didn’t make any other plans that day other than visiting the greenhouse so there was no rush to go home. That said, we really enjoyed our trip there.
The hubs was absolutely mesmerized.
Do you have a flower garden? Is there a Greenhouse in your area that you love to visit?

Great tips! I can’t wait to get to our local greenhouse! I don’t know a lot about plants, so I always like to do a little research before I go so that I can make sure I’m getting the right plants.

I love visiting greenhouses. I can always breathe so much better, and the smells are so wonderful. I love your first picture with all the ferns hanging from above – it’s beautiful!

Thank you, Cherri!
I love this time of year because I can go buy flowers and vegetable plants for my gardens. Now you got me excited to go to a greenhouse.
I actually work in a local greenhouse. These are great tips! We get a lot of folks in that have no idea about plants at all, or even if they are planting in sun or shade. We get incredibly busy and I can’t dedicate a ton of time to each customer, so it makes it hard if they don’t know their growing conditions or even what kind of flowers they like. Sometimes I’ll ask someone what they like, and they actually want me to pick my favorite flowers!
This is really awesome. I love greenhouses, they have so many amazing things inside and the smell is often amazing. Reminds me of spring.
Everything looks so beautiful. I love going to greenhouses. It’s one of the best places to look at all the flowers and plants and to pick some up too. They always have great selections.
We have a lot of local gardens in the area but none like this. I think it’s awesome that you can buy different plants here and grow them at home!
I love shopping for flowers too! It always reminds me of my shopping trips with my grandfather when I was a child.
I love plants and flowers for our home but have the worst luck keeping them alive. Which is why i enjoy visiting greenhouses 🙂 thank you for sharing this. xx
I’m totally the type of person to just walk into a greenhouse without having a clue what to buy. I think you’re right and that it’s a good idea to have a list of what you want to get for your garden/house.
These are great tips! I love walking through a greenhouse and looking at all the different plants and flowers!
I love perennials over annuals because they come back bigger and better than the year before usually. We just moved so we don’t have a big garden going yet but we did get flowers last weekend. I’m hoping to add more in the coming weeks.
Great tips! I am going this weekend to buy new plants and flowers for the garden! I am pretty clueless!
I have never been to a greenhouse but reading your post made me realize that it’s an ultimate experience, Harry and Lynndee! Exceptional tips which I will have to reread when I find a good greenhouse to explore!
Thank you, Lydia! I hope you get to find and visit a greenhouse soon.
