As I mentioned in my weekend guide to Savannah, Georgia post, we took a historic trolley tour of the city. It is definitely the best thing to do if you want to see the city and learn its history. We learned a lot from this tour and saw the entire historic district of Savannah.
Savannah Welcome Center
A shuttle picked us up from the hotel where we stayed and took us to the Savannah Welcome Center where the trolley tour starts. We actually could also start from the hotel since it is one of the drop off/pick up locations, but we decided to go the Welcome Center and start from there.
Other than a gift shop, you can also see the Savannah History Museum at the Welcome Center. It is not for free though. The bench Tom Hanks used in the movie Forrest Gump is displayed here.
The Map
There are a few historic trolley tours in Savannah, but the hotel where we stayed at offers the Old Savannah Tours so that was what we took. It’s a hop-on/hop-off bus. Meaning…you can hop-off of the bus at the locations where it would stop and hop-on a different bus later on. The locations where it stops can be seen on the map.
But we chose to just stay on the bus the whole time and and got out at the last stop, before it went back to the Welcome Center because it was close to our hotel.
The Re-enactors
These guys make the tour more lively. They are such a joy to watch. There were like four of them and they hop on the bus at their designated stops.
Film Locations
Have you seen the movie,”Something to Talk About” which starred Julia Roberts and Dennis Quaid? One of their scenes was filmed at this restaurant, Sixpence Pub. This restaurant was located close to Ellis Square where the Tom Hanks’ bench scene in the movie, “Forrest Gump” was filmed.
We also saw the mansion where they filmed the movie, “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” which starred John Cusack.
There were a lot of movies that were filmed in Savannah, but those were just some of the movies that were mentioned by the tour guide during the tour.
Historic Buildings
Savannah abounds in history and beautiful architecture. And these buildings right here were just a few of what we saw during the tour.
Ghosts of the Pirates House Restaurant
The Savannah Theatre
Telfair Museum
Cathedral of St. John the Baptist
Spanish Moss
This plant is all over Savannah and it drapes beautifully among trees in the squares, shrubs and even buildings or mansions. I do wonder why we don’t have this in North Carolina? 🙂
It was really an exciting and interesting historic tour of Savannah.
Have you ever taken a historic trolley tour? If you ever go to Savannah, you definitely need to take this one!
