With glorious fall weather last week, the hubs and I decided to drive to Mount Mitchell State Park. It was both our first time to visit the state park because even the hubs, who was born and raised in North Carolina, had not ever been there before. He sure had missed a lot, he discovered. 🙂
But before we made the trip, I made sure to research and read about the park and here are the things that you need to know before you head there.
Mount Mitchell is the highest peak east of the Mississippi River with an elevation of 6684 ft.
There is a restaurant, but it’s been closed for the meantime because of COVID-19.
They also have a Welcome Center which we checked out and got some leaflets before we continued our trip to the top.
There are trails that you can explore before you reach the summit, but make sure to watch out for black bears because they are spotted from time to time around the area.
There is a parking lot at the top of the mountain and the drive to the top was pretty easy.
Then you have to walk on a paved trail about 300 yards from the parking lot to the summit.
From up there, you get a 360-degree view of the surrounding areas.
This was at the summit and there were quite a few people there that day, most of which were wearing masks, like us.

There is an observation deck at the summit which is pretty neat.
They have these signs that shows all the four directions and the things that you see in each. That’s for the east.
Here’s for the south. I didn’t get the chance to take photos of the north and west.
And that’s the parking lot behind me.
The state park is located just 35 miles northeast of Asheville. The weather can be cold and foggy at the top and I learned that the best time to go is when the weather in Asheville is great which that day was… sunny and 75. It was the perfect day to go indeed. We got to enjoy the views with no fog at all and the weather conditions at the summit was just great.
Being on the summit of Mount Mitchell is like being on the top of the world. The drive to get there was beautiful, too because the leaves on the Blue Ridge Parkway were already showing off that day. I’ll share more about that next time.
It was definitely an absolutely amazing day trip that we have had.

I love North Carolina. This looks like a beautiful place to visit. Since covid we have been exploring our own state also. Kentucky has so much to offer and we are trying to experience it!
