As a family who loves to go on road trips, we love to explore historical places. And we have been to many since me and my son got here in the U.S. a decade ago. Thanks to my history buff of a husband, he introduced and took us to many, but we still do have a lot of historical places to visit and explore.
We also love doing scenic drives and one of which I look forward to experiencing is driving through the Colonial Parkway in Virginia. It is a twenty-three-mile scenic roadway from Jamestown to Yorktown, connecting Virginia’s historic triangle of Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown.
Colonial Parkway or Colonial National Historical Park is just one of the seven destinations in The Founder’s District. Operated by the National Park Service of the United States government, the park tells about the history of the United States from the first landing of the English settlers to the American Revolutionary War.
The connection of Jamestown and Yorktown is truly ironic seeing that Jamestown is where English settlers first landed to establish settlement in a new world only to have their colonial vision defeated at Yorktown almost 200-years later, the battle that gave America its independence, creating the country that would eventually become a world power.
We have been to a Civil War battlefield before and it was amazing and fascinating to see the site and learn its history. But we’ve never been to a Revolutionary War battlefield and Yorktown, which is part of the Colonial National Historical Park, and would be the perfect beginning of that learning experience. That said, I can’t wait to visit and explore all that this area of Virginia has to offer.
Over 3 million people visit the park each year and soon, we will be part of the millions who experience, enjoy and learn the history of such an amazing historical place.
Have you driven through Colonial parkway or visited the Colonial National Historical Park in Virginia?
