My sister and my brother-in-law made sure that we got to taste the purple yam cake, and my niece (the bride) also made sure to introduce us to Korean bun. And I can’t blame them. These two delicious goodies are perfect to have for an afternoon snack or dessert after a meal.
So yes, it was our first time to have tasted these goodies during our recent trip to my hometown, and that’s because they weren’t a thing yet when we were there almost five years ago. My family in GenSan love these snacks so much they knew we had to have them, too.
The Korean bun with its soft bread dough is filled with sweetened cream cheese filling and then brushed with a garlic butter spread. It tastes buttery, garlicky, sweet and savory. It’s a unique combination and it was so good you would want another bun after finishing one. My sister was actually teasing me after I finished two in one sitting. It’s that addictive!
Purple yam or ube with its earthy, nutty and mildly sweet taste is one of my favorite flavors when it comes to pastries or ice cream. I think I’d had ube cake before, but not as good as this one. I was out and about with my sister and Aunt one afternoon, and when we got home, a Purple Yam cake was already sitting pretty in the refrigerator. Apparently, my brother-in-law bought one while we were away. Each and everyone of us enjoyed a slice after dinner.
Have you had a Korean bun or Purple Yam cake before?
Happy Foodie Friday, friends!

I haven’t tried either before. The buns sound interesting. I’ve not tried anything that is such a varied mix of sweet and savoury. That yam cake really does strike out with that striking purple colour. I’d love to try both of these.
