Taking the road less traveled, the hubs and I took a trip to Augusta, Georgia last week to pick up our son. We’ve all been so looking forward to that day and couldn’t be happier that it finally happened.
I always use the navigation app, Waze when it comes to traveling and it took us to the back roads instead of the interstate to reach our destination. Seeing the countryside of South Carolina and Georgia filled with farmlands and small towns was a joy, for sure. Not to mention, there was no traffic!
Peach Capital of the World
While Georgia is known as the “Peach State,” the town of Johnston in Edgefield County, South Carolina is the “Peach Capital of the World,” as their town’s welcome sign states. This was the area where we saw lands full of lines of peach trees – some still small, some already grown, and some currently bearing fruits. Peach season runs from the middle of May to the first of September in South Carolina.
Saluda, South Carolina
Saluda was just one of the small towns that we drove through on this road trip. This is their main street and I like the paint colors of those buildings. I think this photo didn’t do it justice, but it is pretty.
Historic Landmarks
Came across these objects as well.
William Barret Travis, the co-commander of the Alamo fortress along with Jim Bowie, was born near Saluda, South Carolina. This memorial was placed near his birthplace. The main part of this monument has inscribed the last letter he sent from the Alamo, seeking aid for the endeavor of freedom from Mexico. It ends with the iconic statement “VICTORY OR DEATH.”
James Butler Bonham, Travis’ childhood friend, was also a native of Saluda and too perished at the Alamo along with Travis. There’s also a monument to the two of them on the grounds of the Saluda County Courthouse which we didn’t see for we were unaware of it.
A historical sign marking the site of a Revolutionary war encounter near Saluda.
Augusta, Georgia
Located near the South Carolina border, the city of Augusta is best known to us because of the Masters Tournament. The hubs is an avid golfer and he always watches the tournament on TV. I watch it with him sometimes, so knowing our next road trip would be there gave us another exciting reason. We didn’t get to see the golf course although it was close to the hotel where we stayed at. But we were only there for a night. And we had dinner at this deli that is located just right next door to the hotel. I will share more about that dinner on my Foodie Friday post.
It was a fun trip and the weather was glorious the whole time. It was too hot in Augusta that day when we arrived with a 98 degrees F temp, but we managed. Our highs here in the mountains of North Carolina are almost always just in the 80s.
How about you? Do you like taking the road less traveled?
