I’ve always loved this time of year when these flowers are in full bloom. They are planted right beside future Interstate 26 or I-26 in North Asheville. The flower lover that I am, my eyes are all over these flowers whenever we pass by. There is something about flowers that really make me happy. They are definitely delightful!
There used to be a different kind of flower planted in this area before. They were equally as gorgeous as the sunflowers, but I’ve been wanting to see a field of sunflowers so I was so glad when I saw them.
The other side of the highway was filled with these beautiful zinnias. There are only a few of this pink zinnias scattered among the humongous amount of orange and white zinnias. You would actually not notice them until you come close. At first I thought there was only one and then I saw one more, and then more.
See that bridge on the left? On the other side of that were the sunflowers. Can you spot the pink zinnia right in the middle of this photo?
How gorgeous is that? They will be gone soon and I’m enjoying the view as much as I can.
Did you ever wonder about the importance of plants to beautify public places? You would think it is simply just for the beauty. I used to think of it that way, but there is more to it than just giving beauty actually. Here are the importance of plants in beautifying public places according to Lynden B. Miller of EcoLandscaping.org.
-
Plants have the power to soften and civilize public urban space, even in places once thought to be dangerous.
- These green oases give pleasure to millions who crave a connection with nature in their lives.
This work is done by the North Carolina Department of Transportation Wildflower Program which began in 1985. Anywhere you travel in our state you come across these beautiful scenes which make long road trip not so boring.
How is your area when it comes to beautification?

We live in Georgia, so nature pretty well takes care of the beauty for us. There are wildflowers EVERYWHERE.

I think we all need flower surrounding us where ever we are. It brightens up the day as you go through all the stuff you need to in the day.

I love seeing flowers to make the town prettier. Sadly with the lack of rain and the fires around here, I didn’t feel comfortable ‘wasting’ water by trying to grow a lot of flowers right now. My only hope is we get a lot of rain soon so the fires can get under control. Washington, Idaho, and Oregon really have it bad right now!

We live in Texas, so there can either be a ton of open space or none at all! I really appreciate the cities and town that take the time to ensure they maintain plants throughout the city- it not only makes a visual difference, but an overall community difference as well.

Yep, you’re right about that. I definitely point out and look at the beautiful flowers or plants when I’m driving along a highway or road. It’s even more magical when it’s fields upon fields of them, so pretty!!
Jenn says
I never really thought of it before, but I agree flowers in public places really make or break the beautiful factor!! I always feel happier when I’m surrounded by beauty!

Plants make a huge difference. I always like seeing native areas, even if there are more greens than other colors.
Julie (xfallenmoon) says
Oh gosh, just thinking about a city with no green just depresses me. Can you imagine? I think green spaces and plants affect people’s morale and level of stress. It’s good to have some bits of nature around!

Lovely flowers! I wish everyone would plant some in vacant spaces in their yards. If I had enough space, I would fill my surroundings with flowers, specially the ones that have a pleasant scent – like lavenders.
Tracy @ Ascending Butterfly says
I have been noticing more highway beautification projects around here too utilizing flowers, I think it’s a great idea, it’s way better than the litter that usually clogs up congested highways!

Flowers make the area look beautiful. I love seeing pretty flowers along the way(I need to plant some in my yard). Plus, flowers help the bee population. I love the pretty yellow flower photo too.

That’s one thing I mis about Korea, no matter where you look, you’ll find beautiful scenery. They are very ornate and you can also find exercise stuff in parks which is lacking here in the states.

I recently went on a long road trip and was pleasantly surprised to find wildflowers along the interstate in several areas. They were very well maintained and it’s always fun to find beauty in unexpected spaces.
