It was after watching the Asheville Holiday Parade last month that we decided to walk around downtown Asheville and look for the yarn covered flat iron that we saw on the news. It was chilly that day, but I am more than willing to brace the chill just to see the fun art in downtown.
Yarn bombing is considered a street art and it was the third year that they’ve done it in the city, but it was our first time to see it. And that’s because that was the first time that I’d seen it on the news. I wonder how come I missed the previous ones? 🙂
So fun and so cool! This giant flat iron is located on Wall Street that runs beside the flat iron building. I think it would have been great to see them actually putting the yarn on.
The hubs wrote about the flat iron building before in his post, ‘The Great Art Deco Architecture of Asheville‘. And where the arrow is pointing is where the yarn bombed flat iron sits. Honestly, we’ve walked on this street before going up hill, but I certainly didn’t see the flat iron. I didn’t even know there was a flat iron there until I saw it on the news. My eyes were so focused on where we were going. We are supposed to watch where we’re going, right? 😉
They also yarn bomb the car meters on Wall Street.
That’s my son right there walking with us and checking Wall Street that is also full of different shops.
We really enjoyed looking at the artistic and creative yarn bombed flat iron and meters. I do wonder if they still have it now though. We’ve not been to that part of downtown again after that day. Going to take a look soon!
Have you seen something like this before?

That is really neat, but what happens when it rains? My sister is an “artist”, so I am sure she would appreciate this out of the box art.
Jeanette says
That looks kind of fun. I have asked the same question as the other person what happens when it rains? People are so creative I wish I could be that creative myself.
Heather says
Interesting. How is Asheville taking to it? It isn’t quite my cup of tea, but beauty is always in the eye of the beholder. 🙂

That’s awesome! I wonder how many days did it take for them to have that flat iron crochet bombing? That would be been a lot of work! anyway, it turned out great!

That is so cool. I would love to see that in person myself. I wonder how long it took for them to do that and to make it to exact fit too. WOW!

These are some fancy yarn bombs. If left to me, I would have just wrapped the yarn around the objects.
Megan Elford says
Whoa, they actually do that?! I love it! What a creative way to brighten the sites that people see day after day! I think I need to start some Yarn Bombing in my town!
Terri Beavers says
Oh how awesome. It would be fun to walk around and photographing everything. There is nothing fun to see around here except farming and amish country.
Liz Mays says
Oh wow, this is the first time I’m hearing about yarn bombing. Those artists are very impressive. I can’t believe they did the whole iron!

That’s so attractive! I have never seen anything like it. I guess people in our provinces here in the Philippines who are expert in making handcrafts such as yarns should make similar ones for the street posts as well to boost tourism.

We see this sometimes around New Bern and Swansboro and I always think it’s unique and fun. I wonder how they get them installed unseen though!
(P.S. Your url says yanr instead of yarn)

I saw something similar, but not as elaborate. It only took place in a park downtown, and people had created all sorts of sewn and crocheted shapes and artworks to hang on, around and in the trees and fencing.
