Whenever somebody asks me who am I going to honor on Mother’s Day, without second thoughts, there’s only one person that comes to mind…my beloved mom, though there are other special friends and family I remember. For five years now, I’ve been living a thousand miles away from her. It started after me and my son moved here to the United States from the Philippines to be with my husband. We have not went back yet since we left, but thank heavens for modern technology; it kind of bridges the distance between us. The feeling of being around each other or together is still different, but at least, we get to talk and get updates – still something to be thankful for.
It has been a family tradition that we all go out for dinner on Mother’s Day. Together with my other three sibling’s families, we all celebrated Mother’s Day together with good food and good conversation. This year will be the 6th year that we won’t be celebrating Mother’s Day with them, but I am hoping and praying that it’s going to change pretty soon. They all still continue the tradition minus us, but I am keeping my fingers crossed that it won’t be long until we all will be together again to celebrate it.
Over the years, the best I can do to make mom’s celebration of Mother’s Day extra special aside from giving her a phone call is sending her money. It is much easier and more convenient for me to just do it that way and let her choose what she wants to get or buy herself. Since she’s also loving the idea, this year would be no different. I will send her money for some Mother’s Day shopping. Not the kind of shopping that I wish she would get though. But because managing money is a top priority in our household, a shopping trip cannot be the sky’s the limit occasion. That’s an attitude that I inherited from mom. That’s why I have no qualms of her not understanding the situation because she knows herself how hard earning and managing money can be, even with an ample income. She’s been there and done that, so to speak! Besides, we always believe that it is the thought that counts. And it’s important to me to honor my mom because she, along with my dad, worked so hard to see that I, as well as my siblings, got a good education without having to work while going to school. She sacrificed much out of her love for us.
And as always, I’ll be sending her money through Xoom, a PayPal service, my most trusted transfer money service. I’ve been using Xoom and Paypal in sending my mom or my family money since I got here to the U.S. It is the most convenient for me, not to mention, there was never a moment that I had any problems with it. I feel totally secure with both. And with a no-worry and hassle-free transferring of money that means more time for me to spend with my husband and son – while they honor me on Mother’s Day – as well as other important things like going on a trip perhaps like what she did here…she went to Singapore with friends. Good for you, mom! She definitely deserved a vacation!
This family photo, which is also a family tradition every Christmas Eve, was taken on Christmas Eve of 2009 – mine and my son’s last Christmas Eve with them before we left for the United States. It’s always a joy to see all of us together, especially seeing my nephews and nieces still little boys and girls here. Most of them are all grown up now and funny things is, I’ve seen them grow online.

My mom is very special to me so I’m trying to think of something different this year. My mom really loves flowers but she likes to plant them. So I’m going to buy her a plant that she picks out it’s one of her favorite things.

I always spend the day with my mom on Mother’s Day. I also send her $ via PayPal and we always go out to dinner, my siblings included.

My mom is so special to me that I want to make sure I get her exactly the right thing. Unfortunately, that has equated to not buying anything yet this year. =/

Your mom sounds like such a sweetheart! It must be hard to be away from the rest of your family, but I’m glad you’ve made such an amazing family of your own.

Thank you, Emerald! You’re so sweet. 🙂
You are right there is no gift to ever thank our Mother’s for what they have done. I love that Mother’s day allows us to celebrate how amazing our kids are.
Mother’s Day is such a special day. I try to do something extra special for my mother. Now that I have kids, I know how hard it is!
What an awesome family photo! I agree, nothing could ever pay my mom back either.
Thank you, Sarh! 🙂
I agree about nothing paying mothers back. All us mothers go through so much. Even a little card is great though. I sent my mother a card already and hopefully she gets it by Mother’s Day. I think all the little things really count though.
You have a beautiful family, Lyn Dee. I have lived far away from my mom before, so I know how you feel. I’m sure you miss her so much.
Thank you! 🙂
I was away from my mom and my family for two years when I took on a job in another country. That time was the saddest time in my life. This year on Mother’s day, I will treat my mom to a movie, a spa and beauty make-over and dinner at her favorite restaurant. Just spending time with her is enough to make her happy. Happy Mother’s day to you and your mom, Lynn!
Thank you, Annemarie! 🙂
Your mom sounds like a very special lady. I always miss my mom more this time of the year. She passed away 5 years ago. I lost a good friend, shopping buddy, and mom. 🙁
Hugs to you, Christy.
It is so hard to think of what to give my mother each year… and I think that it is because nothing is good enough! My mother is my hero, and no gift lives up to how awesome she is and everything that she has done for me!
What a beautiful post about your mom. I agree, no Mother’s Day gift would ever pay my mom back from all she has done.
Your mom sounds great. Cherish the time while she’s here. 🙂
Oh I totally agree! There’s nothing I could do to repay my mother for all she’s done for me! But I try to show her how much I love her every single day and spoil her on mothers day!
I wish thatI had a better relationship with my mother. Your mother seems to be so happy.
Mother’s Day is all about honoring the woman who risked her life to give you yours, Happy Mother’s Day!
My mom lives in Brazil, so every year we do a video or something special online, since giving her a gift or spending the day together would be hard!
