Finally, it had to happen. We made the leap into the new world of television viewing. This past year we made a purchase that my wife had been wanting to do for a long time: a 50″ HDTV. As for me, I was in no particular hurry. I was perfectly satisfied with the set we had. But…IT DIED! Oh well.
Initially, I had to hook up an old set that once belonged to my mom. Thing is, it was just a 19″ console. Talk about a tiny picture! And when we went shopping, at first I was trying to find the same-ol’-same-ol’ regular analog set. Oops, wrong answer! The only thing available was HDTV. So be it; I had no choice. Still, we had to wait a little while to scrape the funds together because those bad boys sure ain’t cheap. But we finally lucked upon on at a reasonable price, and using a card, we got it interest free if paid off in 18 months, and we got it paid off in a year’s time. I love it when a plan comes together…(sorry Hannibal.)
And was I ever delighted! We had recently switched from satellite to cable before the old set died, and had got reacquainted with several old friends. On our cable service I discovered three local independent stations whose main programing consisted of great old movies and syndicated television series, five of which were some of my old-time favs: Twilight Zone; Night Gallery: The Outer Limits; Thriller; and The Naked City. All of which are from the late 50’s or early ’60’s. But of course, in that era, there was no filming in HD, and each one of these shows were in black and white. No biggie; at my age, I’m an old-school type, anyway. The only I’ve yet to come across is my most all time favorite of this sci-fi, fantasy and horror genre: Quantum Leap. I’d love to meet up with Sam and Al again.
Before I ran across my old buddies, though, my first thought was to see my Atlanta Braves on the big screen in HD. And, WOW! I couldn’t believe how great it was. Almost as good as sitting there at Turner Field and seeing ’em up close and personal. Well, that may be getting a little carried away but the picture on this TV is magnificent. This photo doesn’t do it justice but it should give you an idea of the quality.
